In today's world, we've come up a bit in mind and body and our relationship with our pets are closer and more important to us than ever before. These companions have always been some of our best friends. We take care of them now and see to it that they have good nutrition and good medical care. People have been flocking to the vets office to get check-ups and shots, fix a broken bone and surgeries for their pets. Costs have sky-rocketed in this area and the affordability of pet care is putting a sizeable dent in the pocket of the average pet owner. Hence, pet insurance was born and now, the problem is finding affordable pet insurance.

Tip 1: You might want to start a little savings account to cover the costs and you wouldn't have to get pet insurance, affordable or not. You would have the money in no time and just pay for it right out of the savings. So, you put your first fistful in the piggy bank and your pet eats the spoiled dog food outside the back door because there was a hole at the bottom of the bag and gets sick with food poisoning. You rush your pet to the vet and it costs three times the amount you've saved. Or, your dog jumps on a little boy riding his bicycle down the street and he falls and breaks his arm. Then, the parents start knocking on your door with the boy's medical bills. There goes that savings idea. And worse, they could sue you. Now there is a fine mess. With that knowledge or experience, pet insurance would be affordable.

Seeing this picture, tells you that the search for affordable pet insurance has begun and choosing the right policy is the next most important step you will do. There are a lot of things to consider. First, what kind of pet do you have? Is he or she exotic. If this is the case, there are some affordable pet insurance companies that will handle this category of pet. Golden Valley, Exotic Direct and Stoneways Insurance are companies to check out for this. Remember to have a look at the payout on your exotic pet, in case of death or if it is stolen.

Tip 2: General points to consider are the age of the pet, it's pedigree and where you live. London and the South East tend to have higher vet bills. Some insurance companies won't cover pedigree ailments i.e. hereditary conditions and conditions they are born with. Check the policy details.

Tip 3: Hopefully, your furry friend won't develop a long term condition. But if he or she does you may be better covered with lifetime pet insurance. The problem is most insurance companies won't pay out on pre-existing conditions, so you can't switch policies once you know about the condition. If you know your breed is more prone to problems it may be worth stating out with a lifetime policy. Or switch to one after the first couple of years if you think it would be age related - remember pre-existing conditions are usually not covered.

Tip 4: Also, another idea for affordable pet insurance is for you to increase your excess. This should lower the cost but think about how much the bill would have to be before you claimed and set it at that level.

Watch out for policies where you have to pay a percentage of the claim. If the visits to the vet are ongoing, that 10 or 20 percent you have to pay each claim adds up.

Tip 5: Finally, read the fine print, have your list of questions ready and haggle with the insurance companies. Sometimes if they think you might go elsewhere, they'll cut a deal. Good luck to you!
